BHER Announces 3 additional work-integrated learning partnerships focused on green skills
OTTAWA - The Business + Higher Education Roundtable (BHER) is pleased to announce the addition of three new work-integrated learning (WIL) partnerships with post-secondary institutions, with support from the Government of Canada.
University of Alberta, Luther College at University of Regina, and the University of Victoria join BHER’s growing list of WIL partners committed to equipping students with the green skills needed for their careers, while supporting Canada’s transition to a net-zero economy.
The new partnerships announced today will build capacity for 150 small- and medium-sized companies and not-for-profit organizations to undertake community-engaged projects supporting the transition to net-zero in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. They will create opportunities for more than 1,100 students to collaborate with a wide range of local businesses and organizations on climate change mitigation efforts.
“BHER is committed to empowering Community Service Learning and Innovation hubs at Canadian post-secondaries, which play key roles in developing talent to advance local economic transitions to a net-zero economy,” said Andrew Bieler, Director of Partnerships & Experiential Learning, BHER.
BHER’s long-term vision is to ensure young people have the skills, knowledge, and experience to succeed in green careers, and at the same time ensuring Canada has the highly-skilled net-zero workforce it needs to remain globally competitive. To date, BHER’s WIL program has created nearly 58,000 WIL opportunities in partnership with 75 post-secondary institutions and organizations across Canada.
Background:
In Budget 2022, the Government of Canada renewed BHER’s funding with a new investment of $17.1 million over three years to create and scale more WIL opportunities for post-secondary students and to strengthen the WIL ecosystem. The investment builds on BHER’s success in 2019-2022, during which BHER created nearly 40,000 WIL opportunities through 42 partnerships, with support from a network of over 150 employers and post-secondary institutions across Canada.
